As Unions, Students Join Occupy Wall Street, Are We Witnessing Growth of a New Movement?

www.DemocracyNow.org – As the Occupy Wall Street protest enters its twentieth day, New York City’s most powerful unions are set to march today from City Hall to the movement’s encampment in the Financial District. The demonstration will be bolstered by the walkout of potentially thousands of students at major public universities in New York City where tuition rates are on the rise. Meanwhile, similar “occupation” movements are springing up in cities around the country. On Tuesday, the Greater Boston Labor Council, representing 154 unions with 90000 workers, supported the Occupy Boston encampment for shining “a spotlight on the imbalance of power in our nation and the role that Wall Street has played in devastating our economy.” Democracy Now! hosts a discussion about whether the Occupy Wall Street movement is sparking a diverse, grassroots movement for economic change. Interviewed is Kai Wright, contributor to The Nation magazine and editorial director of ColorLines.com, where he wrote “Here’s to Occupying Wall Street! (If Only That Were Actually Happening).” We also speak with Arun Gupta, an editor with of The Indypendent, and of “The Occupied Wall Street Journal,” a newspaper affiliated with the Occupy Wall Street movement, where he published an article titled, “The Revolution Begins at Home.” For the complete transcript, podcast, and for additional Democracy Now! reports about the Occupied Wall Street protests, visit www.democracynow.org FOLLOW DEMOCRACY NOW! @mobilechief No I am a Vet of OEF, pretty liberal and when there is a third party I vote Socialism or Libertarians for laughs. I’m just calling a spade a spade and have enough hindsight that this protest is fluff. It seems cool but nobody has a simply way to say why are you protesting. The government bloated bureaucratic and fixed for the 1%. OWS is like protesting your local Mcdonalds for cow slaughtering.

  2. mobilechief says:

Also remember they can not arrest you all it is impossible, trust me I was a cop. Also most cops are on your side silently.

Even if we have schools like Harvard or Stanford, European students are much more educated on average and pay a fraction of the cost because they do not run education for profit the way the United States does. These people are not against paying their fair share, they are against a system that is rigged against them to squeeze every dollar out of the middle class.

    Wtf?
Do you really think it costs 25,000 dollars a year per student to hire college staff and put a bunch of kids in a lecture hall to read and study? College costs something because the way university is structured is to squeeze as much money out of young people as possible while lobbying government to give kids loans to pay for their school which spent more money on marketing to get them there then it spends on their education. In other countries school is cheaper and better.

  14. TheDigimak says:

If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs.
    Thomas Jefferson, (Attributed)
    3rd president of US (1743 – 1826)
